Flipped : Strangely nostalgic

Flipped is a romantic comedy – drama film based on Wendelin Van Draanen’s 2001 novel by the same name . Directed by Rob Reiner , the film is a coming of age story between two characters Bryce and Juli . The film’s title in itself is a triple-entendre that examines flips in opinion, to the flips in the film’s point-of-view, and to “flipped” verb past tense, as in falling for someone.

This film takes you on a nostalgic lane , while the story progresses with a 60’s vibe from the perspective of both the characters , Bryce and Juli , kind of like a ” he said , she said ” story template . The actors Callan McAuliffe (Bryce) and Madeline Carroll (Juli) did a wonderful job in portraying the roles that were given to them . Another actor worth mentioning in this movie is Israel Broussard (Garret) , who plays as Bryce’s friend .

The core philosophy of “Flipped” somewhat comes at a mid-point , where Richard Baker ( Juli’s father ) , says to her :

A painting is more than the sum of its parts. A cow by itself is just a cow; A meadow by itself is just grass, flowers; And the sun peaking through the trees is just a beam of light. But you put them all together and it can be magic .

Richard Baker

Everything in life may not go according to our plan . But you have a house to live , food on your table or at the very least friends or parents who stand by you but people often overlook these things . Some say what matters most to them is love , for some it is god , for some it is work and for others it is reason . If you are focused on only one thing , then you loose your ability to look at the big picture . But when we put it all together , the magic of life begins to take shape .

Also , the movie at one point shows how Juli was distressed where her favourite sycamore tree was cut down . At this point the director cleverly uses alternate voice saying the following words , describing heartbreak .

And that was it. I must have cried for 2 weeks straight. Oh sure I went to school and did the best I could, but nothing seemed to matter. Somehow, rhomboids and isosceles triangles didn’t seem so important. I rode my bike so I didn’t have to pass by the stump that used to be the Earth’s most magnificent sycamore tree. But no matter what I did, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It was the first thing I saw every morning, and the last thing I saw before I went to sleep. And once I could look at it without crying, I saw more than a tree, and what being up there meant to me. I saw the day that my view of things around me started changing.

Juli Baker

We all go through heartbreaks and rejection . We all have cried ourselves to sleep . We all have thought about life being meaningless at some point . But we all tried our best to get through it and return to our normal selves . We try to avoid remainders , we try to bury all the material things attached to our memories , some things we throw it away and few people leave their city to start fresh but no matter what we do , we cannot escape the memories inside us . The only way to get over things is to face it . Look into ourselves until the pain vanishes and once it has gone completely , we can look at what these memories has taught us .

“Flipped” is a great movie to watch and relax . For some , it will be a simple story , for some it will be a movie with one – dimensional characters but for others like me , it’s a meaningful movie told in a nuanced way .
