There has been an increasing interest in Korean movies and tv shows in past few years . With Parasite winning the Oscar this year , the popularity of content from this region is at an all time high . So I thought I will compile a list of the Korean series to watch on Netflix for you guys . Although the meaning of term “best” may change for different people , I hope this list will at least find a few favourites within each one of you . So without dragging on , here is the list of five best Korean series to watch on Netflix :
5 . Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung (2019)
Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung is a television series directed by Kang Il-soo and Han Hyun-hee . The Korean drama set in 13th century , have a total of 40 episodes . The series is a tale of self discovery of a female historian hired to work for the king . This also presents a unique position for the female character as this was the time when women gaining knowledge was frowned upon .
This K-drama through its compelling storytelling presents patriarchal way of thinking that existed in this dynasty . Though it is cheesy at times with romantic quotient thrown in , it would make a wonderful watch on a chill afternoon .
4 . Tunnel (2017)
Tunnel is a sci-fi detective thriller directed by Shin Yong-hwi . The series initially set in mid-80s follows a detective named Park Gwang-ho , who while pursuing a serial homicide criminal through a tunnel , winds up 30 years in future . The detective along with his new partner , chasing the culprit who resumed his killings after 30 years forms the story behind Tunnel .
Tunnel was inspired by Hwaseong serial murders and has a total of 16 episodes . The series with a fast paced storytelling , sets a precedent where it is hard not to binge watch this amazing detective thriller .
3 . Memories of the Alhambra (2018)
Memories of the Alhambra is a Korean drama directed by Ahn Gil-ho . Primarily set in Spain (and in South Korea in latter episodes), the series revolves around a company CEO and a hostel owner who get entangled in a series of mysterious incidents surrounding a new and intricate augmented reality game inspired by the stories of the Alhambra Palace .
This drama is one of the highest rated Korean drama in cable television history . Memories of the Alhambra with its unique story , makes the audience enter its world and care about the characters within it .
2 . Stranger / Secret Forest (2017)
The critically acclaimed thriller Secret Forest , also known as Stranger is a K-drama directed by Ahn Gil-Ho and Yoo Je-won . The story revolves around an emotionless prosecutor, who ends up teaming with a passionate and warm-hearted female detective to uncover rampant corruption and the truth behind a serial murder case .
This Korean drama was featured in New York Times list of Best TV Shows of 2017 . This in itself says how good this series is . Be prepared for a thrilling binge watching experience .
1 . Kingdom (2019)
Kingdom is a socio – political period horror thriller directed by Kim Seong-hun . The series is adapted from the webcomic ” The Kingdom of the Gods “, which was authored by Kim Eun-hee and drawn by Yang Kyung-il .
The series is about a plague overtaking a kingdom in Korean while their king is seriously ill . The film set in Joseon era , is a complete surprise in contrast to zombie tv shows we see today . Kingdom is a series that deserve much more accolades .
